Peter 1 — Living Hope in a Scattered World
Peter writes to believers scattered across regions, reminding them first not of their suffering — but of their identity. They are chosen according to the foreknowledge of God, sanctified by the Spirit, and sprinkled by the blood of Jesus Christ.
1 Peter 2 — A Holy People and a Suffering
Believers are living stones being built into a spiritual house. Christ is the cornerstone — rejected by men but chosen by God. Those who believe are honored; those who reject stumble. Peter applies Old Testament identity language: a chosen race, royal priesthood, holy nation, God’s own possession. Their calling is to proclaim His excellencies.
Peter 3 — Beauty, Unity, and Witness in Suffering
Peter addresses relationships: wives and husbands, emphasizing inner beauty and respectful love. The call is mutual honor, not domination. Believers are to live in harmony, sympathy, and humility. They are to bless, not retaliate. Suffering for righteousness is not shameful.
Peter 4 — Living for God’s Will
Believers are called to arm themselves with Christ’s mindset. Suffering marks a break from former sinful patterns. They no longer live for human passions but for God’s will. The end of all things is near — therefore believers must be self-controlled, prayerful, loving deeply, and hospitable. Each uses spiritual gifts to serve as stewards of God’s grace.
Peter 5 — Shepherding and Steadfastness
Peter addresses elders: shepherd willingly, not for gain, but eagerly. Lead by example. The Chief Shepherd will appear with unfading glory. Younger believers are called to humility. “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” Cast anxieties on Him because He cares.
