1 John 1 — Fellowship in the Light
John begins with eyewitness authority. What was heard, seen, touched — the Word of Life — has been revealed. Christianity is not abstract philosophy; it is historical incarnation. The purpose: fellowship. Fellowship with the apostles. Fellowship with the Father and His Son. Joy made complete.
1 John 2 — Obedience, Love, and Abiding
John clarifies: he writes so believers may not sin — but if they do, Jesus Christ is the Advocate with the Father. Christ is the propitiation (atoning sacrifice) for sins — not only for believers but for the world. Knowing God is proven through obedience. Saying “I know Him” while disobeying reveals false profession.
1 John 3 — Children of God and the Evidence of Love
John marvels: “See what kind of love the Father has given — that we should be called children of God.” Identity defines behavior. The children of God are distinct from children of the devil. Persistent, willful sin reveals spiritual allegiance.
1 John 4 — Testing Spirits and Perfected Love
John commands believers to test spirits because false prophets have gone into the world. The test: Does the spirit confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh? Incarnation is the dividing line.
1 John 5 — Victory, Testimony, and Assurance
Faith that Jesus is the Christ results in new birth. Love for God expresses itself through obedience — and His commands are not burdensome. Believers overcome the world through faith.
