John 4 — Testing Spirits and Perfected Love

In-Depth Summary

John commands believers to test spirits because false prophets have gone into the world.

The test:
Does the spirit confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh?

Incarnation is the dividing line.

Believers overcome false teachers because the Spirit within them is greater than the spirit of the world.

John then expands the love theme:
God is love.

Love originates in God and reveals God.

God demonstrated love by sending His Son as the propitiation for our sins.

Perfect love casts out fear — specifically fear of judgment. Fear relates to punishment; love relates to security.

If someone claims to love God but hates a brother, the claim is false.

Christ Anchor — Chapter 4

Christ is:

• The incarnate Son — fully come in the flesh.
• The propitiation sent by the Father.
• The visible expression of divine love.
• The One whose love removes fear of judgment.
• The foundation of authentic love between believers.

The test of truth and the source of love both center on Him.

1 John 4 — “Perfect Love”

Genre: Warm worship build / steady acoustic anthem

Vibe: Strong truth, deep reassurance, fearless love

Verse 1

Beloved, do not trust each spirit,

Test the voices that you hear.

Many false ones walk among you,

Wearing truth but hiding fear.

Every spirit that confesses

Jesus came in flesh and blood

Is from God — the Christ revealed,

The Son sent down in love.

Chorus

God is love, and love is light,

Driving out the darkest night.

If we love as He has shown,

We prove that we are His own.

There is no fear where love abides,

No trembling left to hide.

Perfect love has overcome—

We stand in Christ, the Son.

Verse 2

Little children, you are from Him,

Greater is He who lives inside

Than the spirit of deception

Working in the world outside.

We have seen and we bear witness:

Father sent His only Son

To be Savior of the fallen—

Redemption has begun.

Verse 3

If we say that we know God

But refuse a brother’s need,

Love is absent from confession—

Faith is empty speech.

But whoever loves is born of Him,

For love reflects His heart.

He loved us first — not we Him—

Grace made the start.

Bridge

In this is love: not that we reached Him,

But that He reached for us—

Sent His Son as our atonement,

Bore our shame upon the cross.

When we live inside that mercy,

Confidence begins to rise—

Judgment loses all its terror,

For love has closed its eyes.

Final Chorus

God is love, and we remain

Safe within His holy name.

As He is, so are we here—

No more slavery to fear.

We love because He loved us first,

He quenched our deepest thirst.

Perfect love has cast it out—

All fear, all doubt.
