Zephaniah 3 begins by exposing Jerusalem’s continued rebellion — corrupt leadership, false prophecy, and refusal to respond to correction. Despite God’s daily faithfulness, the city remains unrepentant.
Then the tone shifts dramatically. God calls His people to wait, promising a future purification where nations worship Him together. Pride is removed, humility restored, and fear replaced with peace.
The chapter ends with joy beyond expectation: God removes judgment, dwells among His people, and rejoices over them with singing. The book that began with sweeping destruction ends with divine delight.
Zephaniah 3 points directly to Christ’s work. Jesus removes judgment, defeats the enemy, gathers the outcast, and dwells among His people.
The image of God rejoicing over His people anticipates the joy of redemption — fulfilled in Christ, where condemnation is gone and communion restored.
Through Jesus, the Day of the Lord does not end in fear, but in song.
Zephaniah 3 — The Lord Rejoices Over You
Verse 1 — The City Rebuked
Woe to the city, rebellious and stained
Oppressing, unrepentant, unchanged
She does not listen, she does not draw near
She does not trust, she does not fear
Her officials roar like hungry lions
Judges evening wolves, unrestrained
Prophets reckless, treacherous voices
Priests profane what should remain
Chorus — The Lord Is Still There
The Lord within her is righteous still
He does no wrong, He never will
Morning by morning His justice shines
Yet the unjust feel no shame in time
Verse 2 — Refusal to Learn
I cut off nations — their towers fell
I laid their streets in ruin and shell
I said, “Surely now you will fear Me
Surely correction you will receive”
But they rose early, eager still
To deepen all their corrupt will
They saw judgment — yet turned away
Refusing truth, day by day
Pre-Chorus
So wait for Me, declares the Lord
Until the day I rise to act
Chorus — Wait for the Lord
Wait for the Lord — the day will come
When justice speaks and evil runs
When fire falls on pride and lie
And truth alone remains alive
Verse 3 — Purified Lips
Then I will purify every tongue
So all may call on the Lord as one
From distant shores they’ll bring My praise
My scattered ones from faraway
No longer proud, no longer loud
But humble hearts within the crowd
A meek and lowly people remain
Who trust My name — not gain
Bridge — A New People
No wrong found in their words or way
No lying tongue, no fear-filled day
They will rest — none make afraid
A quiet flock, securely stayed
Verse 4 — Daughter Zion Rejoices
Sing, O Daughter Zion, rejoice aloud
Shout, O Israel — lift the sound
The Lord has taken judgment away
Your enemy is gone, removed from play
The King of Israel is in your midst
Never again will fear persist
Final Chorus — God Sings
The Lord your God is with you
Mighty to save
He takes delight in you
He quiets you with His love
He rejoices over you with singing
With singing
Outro — Restoration
I will gather the lame and outcast
Turn their shame into praise
I will bring you home, restore your name
Before your very eyes
Says the Lord
