Zephaniah 2 opens with a rare and urgent invitation: seek the Lord before judgment falls. Humility, righteousness, and repentance are presented as the only possible refuge in the coming Day of the Lord.
The chapter then expands outward, pronouncing judgment on surrounding nations — Philistia, Moab, Ammon, Cush, and Assyria. Each represents pride, mockery, and opposition to God’s people. Their downfall demonstrates that the Day of the Lord is not limited to Judah but encompasses all nations.
Yet even here, mercy is not absent. God promises restoration for a humble remnant, turning lands of judgment into places of peace.
Zephaniah 2 anticipates the gospel’s call: seek the Lord while He may be found. The conditional hope — “perhaps you will be sheltered” — prepares the way for Christ, who becomes the sure shelter from judgment.
Where Zephaniah offers a narrow window, Jesus opens a clear door — calling the humble, the repentant, and the seeking into lasting refuge.
Zephaniah 2 — Seek the Lord While There Is Time
Verse 1 — The Call
Gather yourselves — yes, gather now
O nation unashamed
Before the decree takes effect
Before the passing flame
Before the fierce anger of the Lord
Before the Day draws near
Before the moment slips away
While mercy still is here
Chorus — Seek the Lord
Seek the Lord, all humble of the land
You who do what He commands
Seek righteousness, seek humility
Perhaps you’ll be sheltered in that day
Verse 2 — Before the Day
Before you’re blown like chaff away
Before the land turns bare
Before the anger of the Lord
Falls heavy in the air
This is the moment — not tomorrow
Not after loss or pain
Today is where repentance lives
Before the judgment reigns
Pre-Chorus
The door is open — but not wide
Step through while you can
Chorus — Seek the Lord
Seek the Lord, all humble of the land
You who do what He commands
Seek righteousness, seek humility
Perhaps you’ll be sheltered in that day
Verse 3 — Judgment Moves Outward
Gaza will be left deserted
Ashkelon laid waste
Ashdod driven out at noon
Ekron pulled from place
Woe to you along the sea
People of the coastland plain
The word of the Lord is against you
You will not remain
Bridge — The Coast Transformed
The land by the sea will become
Pasture for shepherds’ flocks
Houses for the remnant of Judah
When evening silence walks
The Lord their God will care for them
Restore what was undone
Turn their shame to inheritance
When judgment’s work is done
Verse 4 — Pride Brought Low
“I have heard Moab’s mocking voice
Ammon’s taunting pride
How they threatened all My land
And gloried far and wide
As I live,” the Lord declares
“They will be like Sodom’s flame
Salt and ruin, barren ground
A monument to shame”
Verse 5 — The North Falls Silent
You too, Cush, will fall by sword
No border holds you safe
He stretches out His hand northward
Assyria meets its fate
Nineveh left desolate
Dry as desert ground
Owls and ravens rest where palaces stood
Silence wears the crown
Final Chorus — While There Is Time
Seek the Lord — the humble way
Before the night replaces day
Seek His mercy, seek His truth
While grace still calls for you
Seek the Lord while there is time
Before the line is crossed
Outro — The Question
This is the city once secure
Who said, “I am — and none beside”
Now she lies in ruin still
A warning written by pride
