Zechariah 9 announces God’s judgment on surrounding nations, demonstrating His authority over every stronghold and power structure. Human pride, wealth, and military might prove fragile before the Lord’s sovereignty.
In sharp contrast, the chapter then reveals the coming King — righteous, victorious, and humble. Unlike earthly rulers, He arrives not with force, but with gentleness, proclaiming peace to the nations.
God promises restoration for His people, freeing prisoners and renewing hope through the covenant He has established.
Zechariah 9 directly points to Jesus Christ. The prophecy of the King riding on a donkey is fulfilled in Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem. His reign is defined not by conquest, but by peace, righteousness, and salvation.
Jesus embodies the humble King who defeats enemies not through violence, but through self-giving love. His kingdom stretches from sea to sea, offering hope to prisoners and restoration to the broken.
Zechariah 9 — Your King Is Coming to You
Verse 1 — The Lord Marches
The burden of the word of the Lord
Moves across the nations’ line
From Hadrach down through Damascus
His watchful eye on humankind
Tyre piled silver like the dust
Gold like dirt beneath her feet
But the Lord will strip her strength away
Cast her power to the sea
Chorus — The Lord Sees
The Lord sees every heart and throne
No fortress stands alone
What pride has built will fall away
Before the Holy One
Verse 2 — Strongholds Fall
Ashkelon trembles at the sight
Gaza writhes in fear
Ekron’s hope is cut away
The future disappears
The proud will fade, the violent cease
Their rule will not remain
The Lord encamps around His house
No oppressor there again
Pre-Chorus
No conqueror will pass through now
The Lord Himself stands guard
Chorus — The Lord Sees
The Lord sees every heart and throne
No fortress stands alone
What pride has built will fall away
Before the Holy One
Verse 3 — The King Appears
Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion
Shout aloud, Jerusalem
Your King is coming unto you
Righteous — having salvation
Gentle, humble, riding low
On a donkey, colt untamed
Not with sword or chariot
But peace proclaimed
Bridge — His Rule
I will cut off chariots from Ephraim
The warhorse from Jerusalem
The battle bow will be broken down
He speaks peace to every land
His rule extends from sea to sea
From the River to the earth’s far ends
Verse 4 — Covenant Blood
Because of the blood of My covenant
I will free the prisoners still
From waterless pits of despair
By My sovereign will
Return to your stronghold, prisoners of hope
For today I declare to you
I will restore to you twice as much
What was lost, renewed
Final Chorus — Your King Is Coming
Your King is coming — righteous and true
Victorious, yet gentle too
He brings peace where wars once stood
Your King is coming — God made good
From sea to sea His reign will span
The humble King of every land
Outro — Hope Rises
Prisoners of hope, rise up.
Your King has come.
