Zechariah 8 announces the full reversal of judgment. God declares His return to Zion, not in wrath, but in faithfulness and peace. Jerusalem is renamed the City of Truth, and everyday life — elders resting, children playing — becomes a sign of restoration.
God promises to regather His people from exile, renew covenant relationship, and bless the land with abundance. The chapter repeatedly calls the people to courage, integrity, justice, and truth as they rebuild.
What once marked sorrow and fasting will be transformed into joy and celebration. God’s presence changes the rhythm of life itself.
Zechariah 8 anticipates Christ as the embodiment of God dwelling with His people. Jesus brings truth, peace, and joy into everyday life — not only into sacred spaces.
The nations grasping the robe of a Jew foreshadows the global reach of the gospel, where people of every nation seek God through the Messiah. In Christ, fasting truly turns to feasting, and exile gives way to homecoming.
Zechariah 8 — I Will Return and Dwell with You
Verse 1 — The Lord’s Zeal
Thus says the Lord of Hosts:
I am jealous for Zion still
With great jealousy I burn for her
With passionate, faithful will
Not anger now — but love refined
A zeal that heals, a heart aligned
What I began, I will complete
My promise sure, My mercy deep
Chorus — I Will Return
I will return to Zion
And dwell in Jerusalem
She will be called the City of Truth
The mountain holy again
I will return — I will remain
The Lord of Hosts has spoken
Verse 2 — Streets Alive
Old men and women will sit again
In Jerusalem’s streets restored
Each with staff in steady hand
At peace, no threat, no sword
The city filled with laughing sound
Children playing all around
What once was fear now fades away
Life returns — here to stay
Pre-Chorus
Does this seem marvelous to you?
Nothing is too hard for Me
Chorus — I Will Return
I will return to Zion
And dwell in Jerusalem
She will be called the City of Truth
The mountain holy again
I will return — I will remain
The Lord of Hosts has spoken
Verse 3 — From East and West
I will save My people still
From east and west I bring them home
They will be My people true
I will be their God alone
In faithfulness and righteousness
Our covenant restored
What was broken now made whole
By the faithfulness of the Lord
Bridge — Be Strong
Be strong, you hands that labor now
Let courage fill your frame
The temple built, the work begun
Is not in vain
As once there was no peace or gain
Now blessing flows instead
The seed will grow, the vine will bear
The heavens give their bread
Verse 4 — Fasting Turned to Feasting
The fasts you kept in grief and loss
Will turn to joy and cheer
Seasons marked by tears and pain
Now feast-days drawing near
Love truth — pursue what brings My peace
Let justice shape your way
So joy may last among you long
And not just pass away
Final Chorus — Many Will Come
Many peoples, many tongues
Will seek the Lord one day
Ten will take hold of one man’s robe
And beg him, “Show the way”
For we have heard that God is with you
The word spreads far and wide
The Lord has chosen Zion once
And stands forever by her side
Outro — The Lord Has Returned
I have returned.
I dwell with you.
Do not fear.
