Zechariah 5 presents two visions dealing with sin. The flying scroll represents the covenant curse moving through the land, judging theft and false oaths — violations of God’s law against both neighbor and God. Judgment is personal and unavoidable, entering individual homes.
The second vision shows wickedness personified and removed from the land entirely. The basket containing “Wickedness” is carried to Shinar — symbolic of Babylon — indicating that sin is not merely punished but exiled. God intends to cleanse the land so restoration can endure.
Zechariah 5 prepares the way for Christ by showing that forgiveness alone is not enough — sin must be dealt with fully. Jesus fulfills this by bearing the curse of the law and removing sin from God’s people.
The removal of wickedness to another place anticipates the cross, where guilt is taken away and no longer allowed to dwell among God’s people. Christ does not just forgive — He cleanses.
Zechariah 5 — The Curse Removed
Verse 1 — The Scroll
I looked again — before my eyes
A scroll flew open through the skies
Unrolled and written, front and back
No word concealed, no detail slack
Its length stretched wide, its breadth declared
A message meant to be shared
Chorus — The Curse
This is the curse that goes out
Over the face of the land
The thief will not remain
The liar will not stand
According to what is written
Each will be judged by the hand
Verse 2 — Entering the House
It enters the house of the thief
The home of the false who swear My name
It lodges there — it stays the night
Consumes the timber, stone, and frame
No hidden sin escapes its sight
No private lie survives the light
The curse remains where guilt is kept
Until the house itself is swept
Pre-Chorus
What is concealed will be revealed
What is defiled must be healed
Chorus — The Curse
This is the curse that goes out
Over the face of the land
The thief will not remain
The liar will not stand
According to what is written
Each will be judged by the hand
Verse 3 — The Basket
The angel said, “Look up and see”
A basket lifted before me
“This is the iniquity
Of all the land,” he said to me
A leaden lid was raised on high
A woman sat — called Wickedness inside
Bridge — Carried Away
The lid was forced back down again
The weight of guilt confined
Two women came with wings like wind
A stork’s wide wings, aligned
They lifted up the basket fast
Between the earth and sky
I asked, “Where do they take this thing?”
“To Shinar,” he replied
Verse 4 — Removed
To build her a house in Shinar’s plain
Set on a base, established there
Wickedness taken from the land
No longer dwelling here
Exiled far from holy ground
Bound and carried out
Final Chorus — Cleansed
The curse has gone out through the land
But it will not stay
Sin is judged — and then removed
Carried far away
The Lord will cleanse what He restores
He will not let it remain
Outro — The Land Breathes
The scroll has passed.
The basket is gone.
The land is left to heal.
