Zechariah 4 presents a vision of a golden lampstand continually supplied with oil by two olive trees. The imagery emphasizes divine provision — the light burns not because of human effort, but because God supplies what is needed.
God speaks directly to Zerubbabel, the governor overseeing the rebuilding of the temple. The message is clear: the work will not be completed by military strength or political power, but by God’s Spirit. Obstacles that seem immovable will be leveled, and the project will be finished with joy.
The chapter encourages perseverance, especially when progress feels small. God delights in faithful obedience and oversees the work from beginning to completion.
Zechariah 4 points forward to Christ through the promise of Spirit-powered work. Jesus fulfills this truth by building God’s kingdom not through force, but through the Spirit’s work in hearts.
The continual supply of oil anticipates the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, given through Christ, sustaining the light of God’s presence among His people. The call to trust God’s power over human strength remains central to the gospel.
Zechariah 4 — Not by Might, Nor by Power
Verse 1 — Awakened
The angel who talked with me returned
And woke me like one from sleep
He said, “What do you see?”
I lifted my eyes carefully
Verse 2 — The Lampstand
I saw a lampstand all of gold
With a bowl at the top
Seven lamps, seven channels
Oil flowing — never stopped
Two olive trees beside it stood
One on the right, one on the left
A picture formed of endless light
Supplied without human effort
Chorus — Not by Might
Not by might, nor by power
But by My Spirit, says the Lord
Not by strength you gather
But by My word
Verse 3 — The Mountain
“What are these, my lord?” I asked
He answered clear and strong
“This is the word to Zerubbabel
For the work you’ve waited long
What are you, O mighty mountain?
Before him — level ground
He will bring forth the final stone
With shouts of ‘Grace!’ resound”
Pre-Chorus
The work begun by faithful hands
Is finished by My plan
Chorus — Not by Might
Not by might, nor by power
But by My Spirit, says the Lord
Not by strength you gather
But by My word
Verse 4 — Small Beginnings
Do not despise the day that’s small
When progress feels unseen
The Lord rejoices just to see
The plumb line in his hand — steady, clean
Seven eyes range through all the earth
The Lord sees more than now
What looks unfinished in your sight
Is held by Him somehow
Bridge — The Olive Trees
These are the two anointed ones
Standing near the Lord of all
Supplying oil without delay
So the light will never fall
Not drawn by force, not earned by sweat
But given — day by day
The fire burns because He wills
The flame is here to stay
Final Chorus — Grace
Not by might, nor by power
But by My Spirit, says the Lord
Grace on grace, from start to end
The work is carried forward
Grace to it — grace to it
The Lord has spoken — it is good
Outro — The Light Remains
The lamps still burn.
The oil still flows.
The Lord supplies.
