Zechariah 3 presents a courtroom vision. Joshua, the high priest, stands before the Angel of the Lord in filthy garments — symbolizing the guilt of Israel. Satan appears as the accuser, pressing charges. God responds not by debating the accusations, but by rebuking Satan and removing Joshua’s guilt.
Joshua is clothed in clean garments, signifying forgiveness, restoration, and renewed calling. God commissions him for faithful service and introduces the Branch — a coming servant through whom national cleansing will occur in a single day.
The vision ends with peace restored, fellowship renewed, and guilt fully removed.
Zechariah 3 is one of the clearest gospel pictures in the Old Testament.
The Branch points directly to Christ — the One who removes guilt in a single day through His sacrifice. Jesus silences accusation, removes sin, and clothes believers in righteousness.
Zechariah 3 — Clothed in Clean Garments
Verse 1 — The Accusation
He showed me Joshua standing there
Before the Angel of the Lord
And Satan stood at his right hand
To accuse him, press the charge
His garments stained, his guilt displayed
A priest unclean in holy place
Every fault exposed to light
Every failing brought to sight
Chorus — The Lord Rebuke You
The Lord rebuke you, Satan
The Lord who chose Jerusalem rebuke you
Is this not a burning stick
Snatched from the fire’s grip?
The Lord rebuke you, Satan
This one is Mine — redeemed and chosen
Verse 2 — The Removal
Then the Angel spoke and said
“Take the filthy clothes away”
“I have removed your guilt from you
And dressed you in garments bright”
A clean turban placed upon his head
Pure linen wrapped him instead
From shame to honor, from dust to grace
He stands restored in holy place
Pre-Chorus
No word from Joshua — no defense
Mercy alone speaks in his stead
Chorus — Clothed in Grace
You are clothed in grace, not shame
Forgiven, cleansed, and called by name
The stain is gone, the past erased
You stand now in a holy place
Verse 3 — The Commission
Thus says the Lord of Hosts:
“If you walk in My ways
If you keep My commands and serve
You will govern My house
You will guard My courts
And I will grant you a place
Among those standing here”
Bridge — The Branch
Hear now, O Joshua, and your companions
Men who are signs of what will come
Behold — I bring My servant
The Branch — the chosen One
On a single stone, seven eyes will see
I will engrave its mark
I will remove the guilt of this land
In one single day
Verse 4 — Peace Restored
In that day, declares the Lord
Each will invite his neighbor near
Under vine and fig tree shade
No fear, no shame, no tears
Final Chorus — Redeemed
The Lord rebuke you, Satan
This soul is saved by sovereign grace
No longer clothed in guilt and fear
But dressed in robes of righteousness
The fire could not consume
The stain could not remain
Redeemed, restored, forever His
Clothed in holy grace
Outro — Silence
Mercy has spoken.
The accusation is silenced.
