Zechariah 2 expands the promise of restoration by showing Jerusalem’s future growth and security. A man begins to measure the city, but the vision interrupts the act — Jerusalem will grow beyond measurement. Its safety will not depend on walls, but on God’s presence.
God calls His scattered people to return from exile and assures them of His protection. The chapter also reaches outward, declaring that many nations will join themselves to the Lord. Restoration is not only national but global.
This vision confirms that God’s plan is not merely to rebuild structures, but to dwell among His people.
Zechariah 2 anticipates the fulfillment of God with us. The promise that God Himself will dwell among His people finds ultimate expression in Christ.
Jerusalem without walls points to a kingdom not defended by force but sustained by divine presence. The invitation for many nations to join God’s people foreshadows the inclusion of the Gentiles through Christ’s work.
Zechariah 2 — I Will Be a Wall of Fire
Verse 1 — The Measuring Line
I lifted my eyes — and there before me stood
A man with a measuring line in his hand
I asked, “Where are you going?”
He said, “To measure Jerusalem’s span”
To see her width, to know her length
To count the limits of her strength
But even as the line was drawn
Another word was coming on
Chorus — No Walls
Jerusalem will be a city without walls
Because of people and livestock within her calls
I Myself will be a wall of fire
All around, says the Lord Most High
And I will be her glory inside
Verse 2 — Too Small to Measure
Run — tell the young man what you see
This city cannot be contained
Her future life will overflow
Beyond the lines the cord has claimed
What once was small, what once was torn
Will stretch with life, reborn, reborn
The measure meant to mark her space
Cannot contain My promised grace
Pre-Chorus
Protection not of stone or steel
But of My presence, strong and real
Chorus — No Walls
Jerusalem will be a city without walls
Because of people and livestock within her calls
I Myself will be a wall of fire
All around, says the Lord Most High
And I will be her glory inside
Verse 3 — Come Out
Come out! Come out from the land of the north
Escape the places where you were scattered forth
For I spread you like winds across the sky
But now the call is homeward — draw near, not hide
Zion, flee from Babylon’s hold
Daughter dwelling in cities of old
For whoever touches you, hear this truth
Touches the apple of My view
Bridge — Sent by the Lord
The Lord of Hosts has sent Me
After glory to the nations strong
Those who plundered you will fall
Their power will not last long
Then you will know — without a doubt
The Lord of Hosts has sent Me out
Verse 4 — The Invitation
Sing and rejoice, O Daughter Zion
For I am coming — I will dwell with you
Many nations will join themselves
And become My people too
I will live among you — know this well
The Lord has spoken — He will dwell
Final Chorus — God With Us
I will be a wall of fire
I will be your safety
I will be your glory within
I will dwell with you — says the Lord
And you will be Mine again
Outro — Chosen Place
The Lord will inherit Judah as His portion
And choose Jerusalem again
