Zechariah 6 concludes the night visions with a picture of God’s active governance over the entire world. The four chariots represent divine agents sent to patrol the earth and carry out judgment, bringing rest to God’s Spirit once His purposes are fulfilled.
The chapter then shifts from vision to symbolic action. Zechariah is instructed to place a crown on Joshua the high priest — an unprecedented act. This symbolic crowning points beyond Joshua to the Branch, a coming figure who will unite priesthood and kingship and build the true temple of the Lord.
The chapter closes with a conditional promise: those who obey will participate in God’s ongoing work.
Zechariah 6 powerfully anticipates Christ.
Jesus is the Branch who builds God’s temple — not of stone, but of people. He unites the roles of Priest and King, accomplishing peace through His sacrifice and reign.
The crowning of Joshua is a signpost pointing forward to Christ’s coronation, where righteousness and peace meet in one person forever.
Zechariah 6 — The Branch Will Build the Temple
Verse 1 — The Chariots
I lifted my eyes again and saw
Four chariots come between
Two mountains made of bronze
Unmoved, unbent, unseen
The first pulled by horses red
The second by horses black
The third by horses white
The fourth by dappled strong and fast
Chorus — The Spirits Sent
These are the spirits of heaven
Sent out from the Lord of all
They go to the four winds of earth
They answer His sovereign call
Nothing hidden, nothing free
From the rule of His decree
Verse 2 — The Mission
The black go north, the white behind
The dappled roam throughout the land
They patrol the earth at His command
Until His purpose stands
When the north was quieted at last
The Lord’s Spirit found its rest
Judgment done, the task complete
The nations put to test
Pre-Chorus
What He sends will not return
Until His will is fully learned
Chorus — The Spirits Sent
These are the spirits of heaven
Sent out from the Lord of all
They go to the four winds of earth
They answer His sovereign call
Nothing hidden, nothing free
From the rule of His decree
Verse 3 — The Crown
The word of the Lord came once again
“Take silver, take gold
From those returned from Babylon
Make a crown — bold, not cold
Place it on the head of Joshua
The high priest standing near
A sign beyond the moment now
For those with eyes to hear”
Bridge — The Branch
Here is the man whose name is Branch
He will rise from where He stands
He will build the temple of the Lord
Not by human hands
He will bear royal honor
Sit and rule upon His throne
He will be priest and king as one
Peace between them shown
Verse 4 — The Promise
The crown will rest in memory
As witness in the land
For those who listen carefully
And obey what God has planned
Those who are far will come and build
In the temple of the Lord
Then you will know the Lord of Hosts
Has spoken every word
Final Chorus — Priest and King
Behold the Branch — chosen and true
He builds what none else can do
A priest who reigns, a king who serves
Peace held in both offices joined
The Lord has spoken — it will stand
The future rests within His hand
Outro — The Visions End
The chariots return.
The crown remains.
The Branch is promised.
