Jeremiah 34 exposes a devastating hypocrisy. Under pressure from Babylon, King Zedekiah and the people make a covenant to obey God’s law by freeing Hebrew slaves. For a brief moment, justice is restored.
But when the Babylonian army temporarily withdraws, the people reverse course. They reclaim the freed slaves, violating both God’s law and a solemn covenant sworn in His name. What looked like repentance proves to be convenience.
God responds with piercing irony. Because they refused to proclaim freedom to the oppressed, He proclaims a different “freedom” — freedom to judgment: sword, plague, famine, and exile. The siege resumes, and Jerusalem’s fate is sealed.
Jeremiah 34 teaches that obedience driven by fear is not repentance, and justice practiced only when convenient is not justice at all. God takes covenants seriously — especially those that protect the vulnerable.
You Turned Back” — Jeremiah 34
Verse 1 — The Siege and the Word
The word of the Lord came while walls were tight
Babylon’s fire pressed day and night
To Zedekiah, king on the throne
A verdict clear was made known
“This city falls to the flames you fear
You will not flee, you will stand here
You’ll see the king face to face
And go to Babylon in chains”
Chorus — Mercy Shown, Mercy Refused
I gave you space, I gave you time
I bent the course, I drew the line
Mercy offered, truth revealed
But what you promised… you repealed
When grace arrives and hearts turn back
The covenant breaks… the bond goes slack
Verse 2 — The Covenant Cut
A covenant sworn in the Lord’s own house
Free every slave — the law allowed
Hebrew servants set free at last
A righteous turn from sins long past
They cut the calf, they passed between
Vowed with blood what they had seen
For a moment, justice stood
The people did what they knew was good
Chorus — Freedom Reversed
But when the army pulled away
And fear seemed gone for just a day
You turned around, you took them back
Returned to chains the ones you’d packed
You broke the vow you swore to keep
And dragged the freed back into sleep
Bridge — The Broken Oath
You did not listen when I spoke
You profaned My name, you broke the yoke
You claimed My freedom, then denied
The very word you sanctified
So hear the freedom I decree
Not life and rest, but calamity
I set you free — to sword and flame
To plague and fear and ruthless shame
Verse 3 — Judgment Explained
Those who passed the pieces through
Who swore My name yet proved untrue
I’ll give them to the hands they fear
Their bodies food for bird and deer
The princes, priests, the people all
Who broke the vow inside My hall
Because you turned from justice sworn
Your mercy dies… your trust is torn
Final Chorus — Consequence Speaks
You turned back from the righteous way
You sold compassion for delay
The God who frees will not ignore
When freedom’s gift is chained once more
The fire returns, the siege resumes
A broken word… a city doomed
Outro — The Lesson Stands
The covenant was clear and plain
Do justice now — or wear the chain
The Lord remembers vows once made
What’s sworn before Him must not fade
