Ruth 3 unfolds with deep cultural significance and purity. Naomi, seeing God’s favor upon Ruth, seeks “rest” for her—security through redemption—according to the laws of family inheritance. She instructs Ruth to visit Boaz at the threshing floor after he finishes winnowing grain, a time of celebration but also of danger, requiring utmost integrity. Ruth approaches quietly, uncovers his feet (a symbolic request for covering and protection), and lies down—an act that is bold yet entirely righteous within the covenant customs. When Boaz awakens, Ruth asks him to “spread his garment” (literally “spread your wing”) over her—a legal petition for marriage and redemption in accordance with levirate principles. Boaz responds with admiration, calling her “a woman of noble character,” the same phrase used for the Proverbs 31 woman. He explains there is a nearer redeemer but promises to settle the matter honorably the next day. Boaz sends Ruth home with an extravagant gift of barley—an unmistakable sign of his intention and generosity. Naomi, full of hope, declares that Boaz “will not rest” until the matter is resolved. This chapter teaches righteousness, purity, initiative grounded in faith, and God’s orchestration of redemption. It foreshadows Christ, who spreads His wings over His people, covers them with His righteousness, and secures their future through sacrificial love.
