Ruth 2 displays God’s unseen providence through ordinary obedience. Determined to provide for Naomi, Ruth goes out to glean—using Israel’s compassion laws for the poor, widows, and foreigners. Scripture emphasizes that she “happened” to come to the field of Boaz, a relative of Elimelech, showing that God’s sovereignty directs even seemingly random steps. Boaz’s character shines immediately: he greets his workers with a blessing, notices Ruth’s humility, and extends extraordinary grace to her. Instead of merely allowing gleaning, he invites her to drink from his vessels, remain close to his workers, eat at his table, and gather grain far beyond the law’s requirements. Boaz praises her for seeking refuge under the wings of the LORD, the same imagery later used by Jesus about gathering His people. Ruth brings home an astonishing amount of grain—far more than a gleaner normally could—and Naomi, recognizing God’s hand, blesses Boaz and declares him a near kinsman-redeemer. This chapter showcases God’s care for widows, His ability to work through righteous people, and His provision through both law and grace. It foreshadows Christ, the greater Redeemer who notices the overlooked, welcomes outsiders, feeds the hungry, and provides abundance to all who seek Him.
