Romans 4 Teaching Notes / Biblical Summary

Romans 4 proves justification by faith using Abraham.

Key movements:

  1. Abraham was not justified by works (4:1–2).
  2. Scripture declares he believed and it was credited as righteousness (4:3).
  3. Justification is not wages earned but grace received (4:4–5).
  4. David confirms forgiveness apart from works (Psalm 32).
  5. Abraham was justified before circumcision (4:9–10).
  6. Circumcision was a sign — not the source — of righteousness (4:11).
  7. The promise came through faith, not Law (4:13).
  8. Faith rests in God’s promise, not human strength (4:18–21).
  9. This was written for all believers (4:23–24).
  10. Christ was delivered for sins and raised for justification (4:25).

This chapter answers:

How is righteousness received?
By faith — apart from Law, apart from works.

Who receives it?
All who believe — Jew and Gentile alike.

Abraham becomes Exhibit A.

Christ-Foreshadowing / Christ Lens

In Romans 4, Christ is:

  • The Fulfillment of the Promise
• The Seed through whom blessing flows
• The One delivered for our trespasses
• The Risen Lord for our justification

Abraham believed God would bring life
From a body as good as dead.

God brought life from an actual grave.

Faith in promise
Now rests in resurrection.

Romans 4

What then shall we say was gained

By Abraham, our father named?

If by works he had been declared,

He’d have reason to boast and be spared.

But what does Scripture testify?

“Abraham believed” — that’s why.

And it was counted, credited,

Righteousness upon his head.

To the one who works for pay,

Wages owed at end of day.

But to the one who trusts instead,

Faith is counted — as God has said.

David also speaks this word,

Blessed the one whose sin’s not heard.

Lawless deeds are washed away,

Covered fully, debt not paid.

Blessed the man the Lord won’t count

Sin against his full account.

Was this blessing just for those

Marked by covenant outward shows?

Or also for the uncircumcised?

The answer stands — the faith-justified.

Before the mark upon his flesh,

Before the covenant sign made fresh,

He believed — and was made right.

Circumcision sealed the sight.

So he’s father of all who trust —

Jew and Gentile, dust to dust.

Not through Law the promise came,

But righteousness through faith’s own claim.

For if by Law the heirs are made,

Faith is void, the promise frayed.

Law brings wrath when lines are crossed —

All who trust in works are lost.

Therefore promise rests secure,

By grace alone it shall endure.

To offspring of both Law and faith,

Abraham stands father safe.

Against all hope — in hope believed,

Though aged body strength had heaved.

Sarah’s womb long cold and still,

Yet God had spoken — sovereign will.

He did not waver, did not bend,

Fully convinced God would defend.

What He had promised — He would do.

Faith held fast — and counted true.

“Counted righteous” — not for him

Alone within that ancient rim —

But written for us who believe

In Him who raised Christ from the grave.

Delivered over for our sin,

Raised for our justifying win.

The witness rests. The record clear.

Righteousness comes — by faith sincere.
