Romans 2 confronts moral and religious confidence.
After exposing obvious sin in chapter 1, Paul turns to: • The moralist • The religious Jew • The self-confident law-keeper
Key truths:
This chapter answers: What about “good” people? What about religious people?
Verdict: Guilt is universal — even among those who judge others.
The courtroom now includes everyone.
In Romans 2, Christ is:
Where Law exposes failure, Christ fulfills righteousness.
Where circumcision marks the body, Christ renews the heart.
Romans 2 strips away false security — So Romans 3 can unveil true justification.
Romans 2
You who judge — now hear your name,
You point the finger — yet do the same.
Condemning others from your seat,
While hidden sins lie at your feet.
Do you think you will escape
The righteous Judge no mask can shape?
His kindness meant to lead you near —
Not fuel delay, not harden fear.
Because of stubborn, unrepentant heart,
You store up wrath, you play your part.
For God will judge with perfect sight,
According to deeds — in truth and light.
To those who seek with patient aim
Glory, honor, an eternal name —
Life unending He will give.
But wrath for those who self-serve live.
There is no partial court above,
No bias in the Judge of love.
Jew and Gentile stand the same,
Measured not by tribe or name.
Those without Law still face the day —
Their conscience testifies the way.
The work of Law on hearts displayed,
Thoughts accusing, defense made.
And God will judge what men conceal,
Through Christ — all secrets He’ll reveal.
You call yourself a guide for blind,
A teacher shaping weaker mind.
Boasting in Law, in covenant sign —
Yet break the Law in secret line.
You preach against the theft and lie,
But harbor sin the eye can’t spy.
You honor God with sacred claim —
Yet bring dishonor to His name.
Circumcision outward worn
Does not make the spirit reborn.
True circumcision is within,
A heart cut free from hidden sin.
Not letter carved on stone alone,
But Spirit’s work on hearts of stone.
Praise not from men who outward see —
But from the God who judges truly.
The courtroom tightens — no defense.
Religion fails to make amends.
The Judge is just. The standard clear.
All stand exposed when God draws near.
