Romans 14 Teaching Notes / Biblical Summary

Romans 14 addresses disputable matters — areas not clearly commanded or forbidden.

Key truths:

  1. Welcome believers of differing convictions (14:1).
  2. Do not quarrel over secondary issues.
  3. Each person must act from sincere conviction (14:5).
  4. All believers belong to the Lord (14:8–9).
  5. We will all give account to God (14:10–12).
  6. Do not cause another to stumble (14:13–15).
  7. The kingdom is righteousness, peace, and joy in the Spirit (14:17).
  8. Build up one another rather than destroy (14:19).
  9. Whatever is not from faith is sin (14:23).

This chapter answers:

How do mature believers handle differences?

With humility.
With love.
With awareness that Christ alone is Lord.

Christ Lens

In Romans 14, Christ is:

  • Lord of the living and the dead
• Master before whom we stand
• The One who died and rose to unite us

Freedom without love divides.
Freedom guided by Christ builds.

Romans 14

Receive the one whose faith is weak,

But not to quarrel, not critique.

Some believe they’re free to eat;

Some eat only vegetables to keep.

One regards a certain day

As sacred in a special way.

Another sees all days the same —

Each must be convinced in heart and aim.

The one who eats, eats to the Lord.

The one who fasts, does so for Him.

Each gives thanks before the throne —

Each seeks to honor Christ within.

Who are you to judge another?

They stand or fall before their Master.

And He is able to make them stand —

His grace is strong and faster.

None of us lives unto ourselves;

None dies alone apart.

If we live, we live to Christ.

If we die, we are His in heart.

For Christ died and rose again

To be Lord of both the dead

And of the living — sovereign King

Whose rule extends ahead.

So why judge your brother’s path?

Why look with scornful eye?

For we will all stand one day

Before God’s judgment high.

Each will give account himself

Of words and deeds once done.

So stop condemning one another —

Choose love instead, each one.

Do not let your freedom cause

Another soul to fall.

If food becomes a stumbling stone,

Love says, “I will not at all.”

The kingdom is not food or drink —

Not external demand.

It is righteousness and peace and joy

By Spirit’s guiding hand.

Whoever serves Christ in this way

Is pleasing in God’s sight.

So let us build up what brings peace

And strengthen what is right.

Do not tear down God’s good work

For something passing small.

All things may be clean indeed —

But love restrains its call.

If conscience strikes, then pause your step;

For faith must guide the way.

Whatever does not spring from faith

Is sin at end of day.

So walk in love, not self-asserted —

Not driven by demand.

For Christ alone is Lord of all —

Together let us stand.
