Israel falls into sexual immorality and idolatry with Moabite women, joining in the worship of Baal of Peor. God’s anger burns, and a plague breaks out until Phinehas zealously acts to stop the sin, earning a covenant of peace for his household. This chapter teaches that sin tolerated becomes destruction, but zeal for holiness brings restoration.
