God commands the making of two silver trumpets to signal gatherings, departures, and warnings in battle. On the twentieth day of the second month, the cloud lifts, and Israel sets out from Sinai for the first time since receiving the Law. The Ark of the Covenant goes before them, leading the way. This chapter marks the transition from receiving God’s instruction to living by it. The trumpets remind Israel that every step must be taken under divine command.
