Numbers begins with God instructing Moses in the wilderness of Sinai to take a census of all the men twenty years old and upward who are able to go to war. Each tribe is counted and placed under its leader, revealing an organized people, not a wandering mass. The Levites are exempted, appointed instead to guard and care for the Tabernacle. This opening chapter shows that God’s people are to be ordered, prepared, and consecrated for service. Even before entering the Promised Land, Israel is reminded that strength and unity come from obedience to God’s structure and presence in their midst.
