After time in Persia, Nehemiah returns to Jerusalem and finds serious spiritual decline. The high priest has given Tobiah a room in the temple, Levites have been neglected, Sabbath laws are ignored, and intermarriage with pagan nations has reappeared. Nehemiah takes decisive action to cleanse the temple, restore worship, enforce the Sabbath, and correct mixed marriages. His reforms show that revival must be maintained, or the people drift quickly. This chapter warns that faithfulness requires continual vigilance and renewal. Christ-Foreshadowing: Nehemiah cleansing the temple foreshadows Christ cleansing the temple—removing corruption so God’s house can remain holy.
