Matthew 8 demonstrates the authority of Jesus in action, showing His power over sickness, distance, demons, nature, and social barriers. His compassion is inseparable from His authority — He touches the untouchable, responds to unexpected faith, and heals without limitation.
The chapter also introduces the cost of discipleship, revealing that following Jesus requires urgency, trust, and surrender. Jesus’ calming of the storm displays His divine authority over creation, leading the disciples to ask the central question: “What kind of man is this?”
Jesus fulfills Isaiah’s prophecy by bearing humanity’s sickness and suffering, pointing toward the cross where He will carry sin itself. His authority over nature anticipates His resurrection power, while His welcome of Gentile faith foreshadows the inclusion of the nations in God’s Kingdom.
Matthew 8 — Authority That Heals
(Song Lyrics — Response Two Style)
Verse 1 — If You Are Willing
He came down the mountain, crowds in His wake,
Truth still echoing from words He’d spoke.
A leper knelt low, unclean, afraid,
“Lord, if You are willing, I can be made.”
Jesus reached out, no distance kept,
Touched the broken the law once kept.
“I am willing,” mercy revealed—
And flesh remembered how to heal.
Pre-Chorus
No fear remained, no shame could stay,
When compassion spoke in sovereign grace.
Chorus — Authority That Heals
Authority that heals, not crushes the weak,
Power that bends down to those who seek.
One word spoken, chains undone,
The Kingdom comes where faith has begun.
Not distant rule, not silent will—
This is the power that loves us still.
Verse 2 — Speak the Word
A Roman soldier stood amazed,
Unworthy eyes yet fearless faith.
“Just speak the word — that’s all You need,
Authority moves where You decree.”
Jesus marveled at faith so rare,
Found outside the covenant care.
East and west will gather in,
While faithless hearts remain shut in.
Chorus — Authority That Heals
Authority that heals, unseen yet sure,
Faith that trusts when sight is unsure.
Distance fades when truth is said,
Life returns where hope lay dead.
Not bound by space, not held by fear—
This is the Kingdom drawing near.
Verse 3 — Many Healed at Evening
Peter’s home, a fevered cry,
One touch later — life passed by.
As night fell deep, the sick were brought,
Every demon fled, every illness fought.
He bore our weakness, carried pain,
Isaiah’s words stood proven plain.
Yet crowds pressed close, the cost was shown,
No place to rest, no claim to home.
Bridge — The Cost of Following
“Foxes have holes, birds have a place,
But the Son walks on by faith.”
Another delayed, clinging to the past,
“Let the dead bury what will not last.”
The call is simple, the cost is clear,
Life is found when you follow here.
Final Chorus — Authority That Heals
Authority that heals storm and soul,
Speaks peace where chaos takes control.
Even the winds obey His name,
Creation listens when He proclaims.
Who is this Man the seas reveal?
The Lord of all — authority that heals.
Outro
Fear bows low where faith is found,
Storms grow still at a whispered sound.
From touch to word to raging sea,
All creation answers His decree.
