Matthew 5 opens the Sermon on the Mount, revealing the values and ethics of God’s Kingdom. Jesus blesses those the world overlooks and calls His followers to a deeper righteousness that transforms the heart, not merely behavior.
The chapter includes the Beatitudes, Jesus’ declaration that He fulfills the Law, and His teachings on anger, lust, integrity, retaliation, and love for enemies. The Kingdom of Heaven is shown to operate on grace-driven obedience, rooted in love and holiness that reflects the character of the Father.
Jesus reveals Himself as the true Lawgiver, greater than Moses, teaching from the mountain with divine authority. He embodies the Beatitudes perfectly and fulfills the Law through His obedience and sacrificial love. His call to perfection in love anticipates the cross, where divine mercy and righteousness fully meet.
Matthew 5 — The Kingdom Way
(Song Lyrics)
Verse 1 — Blessed Are the Poor
Blessed are the poor, the empty-handed ones,
Those who know their need before the work is done.
Blessed are the mourners, the hearts that break,
For comfort is promised in the tears we make.
Blessed are the meek who do not demand,
For the earth is entrusted to gentle hands.
Pre-Chorus
The world says climb, defend, and prove,
But heaven begins where we surrender to You.
Chorus — The Kingdom Way
This is the Kingdom way, upside down,
Where the last are lifted and the lost are found.
Not by force or pride or earthly sway,
But by hearts remade in a quieter way.
The narrow road leads into grace—
This is the Kingdom way.
Verse 2 — Hunger, Mercy, and Peace
Blessed are the hungry who long for what’s right,
They will be filled by heaven’s light.
Blessed are the merciful, mercy they’ll find,
Grace returning in God’s perfect time.
Blessed are the pure, with no mask to wear,
They will see God standing there.
Blessed are the peacemakers, sons they’ll be named,
Carrying heaven into broken terrain.
Chorus — The Kingdom Way
This is the Kingdom way, upside down,
Where the weak are crowned and the proud bow down.
Not by violence, fear, or moral display,
But by love that obeys when it costs to stay.
The narrow road leads into grace—
This is the Kingdom way.
Verse 3 — Salt and Light
You are the salt that preserves the land,
Do not lose your savor in empty command.
You are the light set high to be seen,
Not hidden in fear, but living between.
Let your good works shine in plain sight,
So the Father is honored in heaven’s light.
Bridge — Fulfilled, Not Forgotten
Not one word will fade, not a stroke erased,
Till all is fulfilled as the prophets faced.
The Law stands true, its heart revealed,
Not lowered or broken, but fully fulfilled.
Verse 4 — A Deeper Righteousness
Anger counts murder in heaven’s sight,
Lust breaks covenant in the dark of night.
Oaths fall short when truth is bent,
Let yes be yes — fully meant.
Love your enemy, pray when struck,
This Kingdom lives by holy trust.
Final Chorus — The Kingdom Way
This is the Kingdom way, costly and kind,
Where the heart is judged, not the outward line.
Be perfect in love as the Father is true,
Not by striving alone, but made new in You.
The narrow road leads into grace—
This is the Kingdom way.
Outro
On the mountain’s edge, the Teacher spoke,
A Kingdom revealed to the humble-broke.
The law fulfilled, the heart laid bare—
Heaven’s life begins right here.
