Matthew 3 introduces John the Baptist, whose mission is to prepare Israel for the arrival of the Messiah through a call to repentance. His message confronts empty religious confidence and demands genuine heart change, evidenced by righteous fruit.
John announces that the coming Messiah will bring a greater baptism — not only symbolic water, but the Holy Spirit and fire, representing both purification and judgment. Jesus’ baptism marks the beginning of His public ministry, not because of sin, but to fulfill all righteousness.
The chapter climaxes with a Trinitarian revelation: the Son baptized, the Spirit descending, and the Father affirming Jesus as His beloved Son.
Verse 1 — A Voice in the Wilderness
Out in the desert where echoes remain,
A voice cut through silence, calling by name.
Not clothed in splendor, not polished or proud,
But dressed in repentance, crying aloud.
“Turn your hearts back, the kingdom is near,
Prepare the way — the Lord is here.”
The waters were waiting, the crowds pressed in close,
As sinners confessed what the soul can’t ignore.
Pre-Chorus
Not empty religion, not borrowed belief,
But hearts laid bare in honest grief.
Chorus — Prepare the Way
Prepare the way, make the pathway straight,
The King is coming — don’t hesitate.
Every valley raised, every mountain brought low,
Let the truth of heaven through repentance flow.
The voice still cries through dust and clay:
Prepare the way… prepare the way.
Verse 2 — Fruit Worthy of Repentance
Pharisees watching with judgmented eyes,
Claiming their lineage, cloaked in disguise.
“You brood of vipers,” the prophet declared,
“Who warned you of wrath if your hearts aren’t repaired?”
An ax at the root, a tree will be known,
By the fruit it bears, not the claims it has sown.
God can raise children from stones on the ground,
Grace is not owned — it is freely poured out.
Chorus — Prepare the Way
Prepare the way, make the pathway straight,
The fire is coming — it will separate.
The wheat gathered home, the chaff blown away,
Truth burns bright where pretense decays.
The voice still cries through dust and clay:
Prepare the way… prepare the way.
Verse 3 — The Greater One Appears
“I baptize with water, a turning of hearts,
But One is approaching who finishes the start.
I am not worthy to loosen His feet,
He baptizes with fire, with Spirit complete.”
Then Jesus stepped down to the Jordan’s edge,
The sinless Son standing among the repentant led.
John stood trembling, “This should not be so,”
But grace answered gently, “Let it be so.”
Bridge — Heaven Opened
The waters parted, the Spirit descended,
Like a dove from the heavens, the moment suspended.
The Father spoke with thunder and love:
“This is My Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
Final Chorus — Prepare the Way
Prepare the way — heaven has spoken,
The silence is broken, the veil stands open.
The Son is revealed, the Spirit has come,
The Kingdom is breaking — the work begun.
From desert cry to sacred day:
Prepare the way… prepare the way.
Outro
The path is set, the voice fades back,
But the King now walks the human track.
The road is marked by water and flame—
And nothing will ever be the same.
