Matthew 17

Matthew 17 reveals Jesus’ divine identity through the Transfiguration. Peter, James, and John witness Jesus in radiant glory, confirming Him as the fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets. The Father’s voice establishes Jesus’ unique authority: “Listen to Him.”

Descending from the mountain, Jesus meets human weakness and teaches that faith — even small — connects to God’s power. The chapter balances revelation with humility, reminding disciples that glory is not an escape from suffering, but preparation for obedience.

Christ-Foreshadowing

The Transfiguration previews resurrection glory before the cross, strengthening the disciples for what lies ahead. Moses and Elijah testify that all Scripture points to Christ. Jesus’ descent into the valley anticipates His journey toward Jerusalem, where revealed glory will be hidden again — until it bursts forth in resurrection.

Matthew 17 — Glory Revealed

Verse 1 — Up the Mountain

Six days later He called them near,

Peter, James, and John were here.

Up the mountain, away from the crowd,

Where heaven would speak and glory would sound.

His face shone bright like the rising sun,

His clothes burned white — the veil undone.

What they’d followed now stood revealed,

The hidden Christ, the glory sealed.

Pre-Chorus

Not just teacher, not just sign,

Heaven’s Son in borrowed time.

Chorus — Glory Revealed

Glory revealed before their eyes,

Heaven breaking through the skies.

Not a story, not concealed,

This is the Son — glory revealed.

For a moment they could see

Who He was… and soon would be.

Verse 2 — Law and Prophets

Moses stood from the law once given,

Elijah came, the voice of heaven.

All the Scripture standing there,

Pointing forward — fulfilled in Him alone, made clear.

Peter spoke what awe had stirred,

“Let’s stay right here, build three words.”

But the cloud rolled in, the moment changed,

Human plans were gently rearranged.

Chorus — Glory Revealed

Glory revealed, the Father spoke,

“This is My Son — My chosen hope.”

Listen to Him, not fear or zeal,

This is the Christ — glory revealed.

Falling down, they lost all sight,

Till mercy touched them in the light.

Verse 3 — Coming Down the Mountain

As they walked back down the hill,

Jesus spoke with steady will:

“Tell no one what your eyes have seen,

Until the Son of Man is raised again.”

They asked of Elijah, what it meant,

He said, “He came — but hearts were bent.

John prepared the way they missed,

And now the Son will suffer this.”

Bridge — Faith in the Valley

A father cried from desperate pain,

“My son is bound — we tried in vain.”

The disciples failed where fear stood tall,

But Jesus answered the anguished call.

“This kind moves when faith is real,

Not loud belief, but trust that kneels.”

A mustard seed can shift the ground,

When heaven’s power is leaned upon.

Final Chorus — Glory Revealed

Glory revealed — then walked back down,

From shining heights to broken ground.

The cross ahead, the path made clear,

But power walks with faith, not fear.

What was shown would strength supply

For darker days that soon would rise.

Outro — The Coin in the Fish

At the temple gate the question came,

“Does your Teacher pay the claim?”

Jesus spoke of sons set free,

Yet chose the path of humility.

From a fish, the coin was found,

Provision met without a sound.

The King who owed no debt at all

Still paid in love — to reach them all
