Malachi 4 contrasts two outcomes of the coming Day of the Lord. For the arrogant and unrepentant, the day brings judgment like consuming fire. For those who fear the Lord, it brings healing, freedom, and joy — pictured as the rising sun after a long night.
God calls His people to remember the law given through Moses and promises to send Elijah before the Day arrives. This messenger will bring reconciliation, turning hearts within families and communities, preparing the way for what comes next.
The book ends not with judgment, but with expectation — a promise poised on the edge of fulfillment.
Malachi 4 points directly to Christ as the Sun of Righteousness, bringing healing and restoration. The promised Elijah finds fulfillment in John the Baptist, who prepares the way for Jesus by calling people to repentance.
The Old Testament closes with anticipation, and the New Testament opens by answering it. The silence between them is not absence — it is pregnancy with promise.
Malachi 4 — The Sun of Righteousness Will Rise
Verse 1 — The Day
Surely the day is coming — burning bright
Like a furnace filled with flame
All the arrogant, all who do evil
Will be stubble to the name
Not root nor branch will remain
When that day appears
The coming fire makes the difference clear
Between truth and fear
Chorus — The Sun Will Rise
But for you who fear My name
The Sun of Righteousness will rise
With healing in His wings
You will go out and leap like calves
Released from winter’s grip
Joy breaks through the long night
The Sun will rise — the Sun will rise
Verse 2 — Justice Set Right
You will tread upon the wicked
Ashes underfoot that day
When I act, says the Lord of Hosts
Justice will have its way
The day will tell the story true
What each heart has chosen
Light will fall where darkness stood
Every deed exposed
Pre-Chorus
The day draws near
But so does hope
Chorus — The Sun Will Rise
But for you who fear My name
The Sun of Righteousness will rise
With healing in His wings
You will go out and leap like calves
Released from winter’s grip
Joy breaks through the long night
The Sun will rise — the Sun will rise
Verse 3 — Remember
Remember the law of My servant Moses
The statutes given at Horeb
Hold fast to what was spoken then
Let truth remain undisturbed
For before the great and dreadful day
A messenger I will send
Elijah’s spirit will turn the hearts
And restore what’s been bent
Final Chorus — Before the Silence
He will turn the hearts of fathers
To their children once again
Turn the hearts of children home
Lest the land fall under ban
The promise stands — the dawn awaits
Before the silence breaks
The Sun of Righteousness will rise
And healing comes in waves
Outro — The Dawn
Remember.
Prepare.
The morning is coming.
