Malachi 1 opens with God declaring His love for Israel, only to be met with skepticism. The people question whether God truly loves them, revealing spiritual distance and cynicism. God responds by pointing to His covenant choice — not based on merit, but on faithfulness to His promise.
The chapter then confronts corrupt worship. The priests offer blemished sacrifices and treat God’s altar with indifference. Their actions reveal hearts that no longer value God’s holiness. God declares that empty worship dishonors Him and would be better stopped altogether.
The chapter closes with a global vision: God’s name will be honored among the nations, even if His own people fail to honor Him.
Malachi 1 exposes the need for a perfect offering and a faithful priest. The blemished sacrifices point forward to Christ — the unblemished Lamb, fully honoring the Father.
The promise that God’s name will be honored among the nations anticipates the gospel’s spread through Christ, where true worship is restored and God’s worth is rightly displayed.
Malachi 1 — I Have Loved You
Verse 1 — The Claim
A word from the Lord to Israel
By Malachi’s hand was given
“I have loved you,” says the Lord
A statement spoken, heaven-driven
Chorus — The Question
“But how have You loved us?”
The people reply
Where is the proof we can see?
“If You have loved us,” they ask aloud
“Then show us clearly”
Verse 2 — Chosen Love
“Was not Esau Jacob’s brother?”
The Lord begins to say
“Yet Jacob I chose in love
While Esau’s way passed away
I laid his hills to wasteland ground
His heritage left bare
Though Edom rises, I will tear down
For I have chosen — I care”
Pre-Chorus
Love proved not by ease or gain
But by covenant that remains
Chorus — I Have Loved You
“I have loved you,” says the Lord
Through judgment, mercy, truth
Not every blessing looks like gold
But I have chosen you
“I have loved you,” says the Lord
Though you question still
My word stands firm — unshaken love
By sovereign will
Verse 3 — Worship Exposed
A son honors his father’s name
A servant fears his lord
But where is honor due to Me?
Where is reverent accord?
You bring blind offerings to My altar
The lame, the sick, the weak
Would you offer this to your governor?
Yet to Me, you speak
Bridge — Empty Honor
You say, “How have we despised Your name?”
By giving what costs you least
By calling the table of the Lord
Common — not sacred, not esteemed
Oh, that one would shut the doors
So vain fires would cease
Better no worship than empty praise
That does not honor Me
Verse 4 — The Lord’s Name
From sunrise to the distant west
My name will be honored still
Pure offerings among the nations
Fulfilled by sovereign will
But you profane what I have called
Holy, weighty, true
You say, “What a burden this is,”
And sigh — as though I weary you
Final Chorus — Great Is My Name
Great is My name among the nations
Says the Lord of Hosts
I am not honored by leftovers
But by hearts that value Me most
I have loved you — hear Me now
Do not take My grace in vain
Outro — The Last Word
“I am a great King,” says the Lord,
“My name is to be feared among the nations.”
