Luke 15 Teaching Notes / Biblical Summary

Luke 15 responds to criticism by revealing God’s heart for the lost. Through three parables, Jesus shows that God actively seeks what is lost, rejoices when repentance occurs, and restores fully rather than reluctantly.

The lost sheep and lost coin emphasize God’s initiative and heaven’s joy. The parable of the lost son exposes two kinds of lostness — rebellion and self-righteousness — and reveals a Father who runs toward repentance and invites the resistant into mercy.

Christ-Foreshadowing

Luke 15 foreshadows Christ as the Shepherd who seeks, the Light who searches, and the Son who reveals the Father’s heart. The Father running anticipates the cross — God moving toward sinners before they can earn return.

Luke 15

Full Song Lyrics

Verse 1 —

The sinners drew near just to hear

The Pharisees whispered in fear

“He welcomes them — eats at their side”

So Jesus answered with stories alive

Verse 2 — One Lost Sheep

“What man with ninety-nine

Would leave them all behind

To search the hills till one is found?”

He lifts it home, joy unbound

“Rejoice with me — the lost is near

Heaven celebrates repentance here”

Chorus — Found

What was lost has now been found

Joy breaks out where grace abounds

Heaven sings when one turns home

No one’s ever lost alone

Verse 3 —

“What woman, losing just one piece

Would not light a lamp, sweep the floor in grief?”

Till it’s found, she calls her friends

“Rejoice with me — the search now ends”

So angels celebrate again

When one heart turns back from sin

Verse 4 — Two Lost Sons

“A father had two sons,” He said

The younger asked for what was his

He took his share, left home and truth

Wasted it all in reckless youth

When famine hit and hunger stayed

He longed for scraps the pigs had ate

Verse 5 — Coming Home

He came to himself, said, “I’ll return

Confess my wrong, accept what I’ve earned”

But while he walked, still far away

His father ran — love led the way

He held him close, erased the past

Restored him fully, first and fast

Chorus — He Ran to Me

He ran to me before I spoke

Grace outran the words I broke

Robe and ring, the debt erased

I was lost — now I’m embraced

Verse 6 — The Older Son

The older heard the music play

Anger burned, he stayed away

“I’ve served you all these years,” he cried

“You never gave me reason to rejoice inside”

The father said, “You’re always here

But mercy brings the lost one near”

Final Chorus — Come Inside

Come inside — the feast is spread

The dead now live, the lost is led

Rejoice with Me — let judgment cease

My joy is mercy, life, and peace

Outro

Two sons lost in different ways

One by running, one by staying
