Luke 10 shows how God’s Kingdom moves outward through obedient followers and inward through transformed hearts. Jesus sends out the seventy-two to prepare the way, teaching them to depend on God and to respond faithfully whether they are received or rejected.
When they return rejoicing in power, Jesus redirects their joy toward eternal belonging — being known by God. He then affirms that spiritual understanding is given to the humble, not the proud.
The chapter culminates in the parable of the Good Samaritan, where Jesus redefines “neighbor” not by proximity or religion, but by mercy in action. Eternal life is shown not as abstract belief, but as love expressed through compassionate obedience.
Luke 10 foreshadows Christ as the true Neighbor who sees humanity wounded by sin, stops where others pass by, bears the cost of healing, and promises to return. The Samaritan’s compassion anticipates the mercy Jesus will fully display through the cross.
Luke 10
Verse 1 —
The Lord sent seventy-two
Two by two with work to do
“Go before Me, town to town
The harvest waits on ready ground
Carry no bag, no extra care
Speak peace first when you arrive there”
Chorus —
The Kingdom is near, it’s at your door
Not far away, not long before
Heal the sick, let mercy speak
God has come to the poor and weak
Verse 2 —
“If they receive you, stay and eat
Let grace and truth together meet
If they refuse, don’t fight or plead
Shake the dust — they’ve made their creed
It will be easier in judgment’s day
Than for towns that turn away”
Verse 3 —
They came back filled with awe and fire
“Even demons flee when we speak Your name!”
Jesus answered, calm but clear
“I saw Satan fall from here
I’ve given you authority true
But hear what matters most to you”
Chorus — Rejoice in This
Do not rejoice in power displayed
Or wonders done, or fear you’ve made
Rejoice instead — lift thankful breath
Your names are written beyond death
Verse 4 —
Jesus rejoiced in the Spirit then
Thanking the Father before all men
“You hide from proud what they demand
And give to children truth firsthand
Blessed are eyes that truly see
What kings longed for secretly”
Verse 5 —
A lawyer stood to test the way
“What must I do for life to stay?”
“Love the Lord with all you are
Love your neighbor — near or far”
“You’ve answered right,” the Teacher said
“But one more thing was left unsaid”
Verse 6 —
“To justify himself,” he asked
“Who is my neighbor in this task?”
Jesus spoke of a wounded man
Left half-dead in a roadside land
A priest passed by, a Levite too
Both crossed over — nothing to do
Verse 7 —
A Samaritan saw and stayed
Bandaged wounds, the price he paid
Lifted him up, carried the load
Paid the cost, walked the road
“Which one loved?” — the answer plain
“The one who showed mercy again”
Final Chorus —
Not just words, not knowing names
But mercy lived — go do the same
Love that stops, love that sees
That’s how God loves neighbors like these
Outro
The Kingdom comes where mercy starts
Through willing hands and open hearts
