Judges 9 tells the dark story of Abimelech, Gideon’s son by a concubine, who manipulates the leaders of Shechem, murders his brothers, and crowns himself king. Jotham, the sole survivor, warns Shechem with a parable of trees seeking a king. God sends an evil spirit between Abimelech and Shechem, and their alliance collapses. Abimelech destroys Shechem but dies when a woman drops a millstone on his head. His death fulfills Jotham’s curse, revealing that God judges wicked leadership and brings justice to those who rebel against His ways.
