Judges 8 follows the aftermath of Gideon’s triumph. Ephraim confronts him in jealousy, but Gideon calms them with gentle words. He pursues the Midianite kings Zebah and Zalmunna, yet the towns of Succoth and Penuel refuse to help his weary men. After capturing the kings, Gideon disciplines those towns for their lack of support. The people ask Gideon to be king, but he rejects kingship, insisting the Lord is Israel’s ruler. However, Gideon makes an ephod that becomes an idol. After he dies, Israel returns to Baal worship. This chapter warns of spiritual drift even in times of victory.
