Judges 6 introduces Gideon during seven years ofMidianite oppression. Israel hides in caves as Midian devours their crops. When they cry out, God sends a prophet to remind them of His past deliverance and their present disobedience. The Angel of the Lord appears to Gideon—fearful, hiding in a winepress—calling him a “mighty warrior.” Gideon questions why God has abandoned them, but God reassures him with His presence. Gideon destroys his father’s Baal altar at night, and the Spirit of the Lord empowers him. Yet Gideon asks for signs—the fleece wet, then dry—revealing both his weakness and God’s patient faithfulness.
