Judges 3 details Israel’s repetition of sin and God’s mercy through three early judges. After Israel falls into idolatry, God allows Cushan-Rishathaim to oppress them until they cry out, leading God to empower Othniel, Caleb’s nephew, who brings forty years of peace. After Othniel dies, Israel again turns to evil, so God allows Eglon of Moab to enslave them. Ehud, a left-handed Benjamite, assassinates Eglon and leads Israel to victory. Finally, Shamgar kills six hundred Philistines with an oxgoad. This chapter highlights God’s repeated deliverance through unlikely people and emphasizes Israel’s increasing dependence on temporary human leaders instead of wholehearted repentance.
