Judges 20 describes Israel’s response to the atrocity. The tribes gather at Mizpah, demanding that Benjamin surrender the guilty men of Gibeah. Benjamin refuses and chooses to defend them. Israel seeks guidance from the Lord but suffers two initial defeats, losing thousands. After weeping, fasting, and offering sacrifices, God promises victory. On the third day, Israel sets an ambush, destroys Gibeah, and nearly wipes out the tribe of Benjamin. The chapter shows the tragic consequences of tolerating evil and the devastating cost of civil war.
