Judges 2 explains why Israel entered centuries of spiritual collapse. The Angel of the Lord rebukes them at Bokim for failing to drive out the nations and for forming alliances with idol-worshipers. After Joshua’s generation dies, a new generation rises that does not know the Lord, and they quickly turn to Baal and Ashtoreth. God gives them over to their enemies, but when they cry out, He raises judges to deliver them. Yet after each judge dies, the people become more corrupt than before. This chapter outlines the tragic pattern repeated throughout Judges: sin, oppression, crying out, deliverance, peace, and then deeper sin. It exposes the heart’s need for a righteous, permanent Deliverer.
