Judges 10 introduces Tola and Jair, two judges who bring decades of stability. After they die, Israel turns again to seven foreign gods, abandoning the Lord. God allows Ammon and Philistia to oppress them for eighteen years. When the people cry out, God confronts their repeated unfaithfulness, but they put away their idols and plead for mercy. Scripture says God “could no longer bear Israel’s misery.” As Ammon gathers to attack, Israel desperately searches for a leader, preparing the way for Jephthah.
