Judges 1 begins after Joshua’s death, as the tribes seek the Lord regarding who should lead the remaining conquest. God appoints Judah, and they win several victories—including defeating Adoni-Bezek—yet signs of spiritual compromise begin immediately. Many tribes fail to drive out the Canaanites, allowing pagan cities, idols, and practices to remain within Israel’s borders. Though God had given them the land, the people settle for partial obedience, coexisting with those who would later lead them astray. The chapter reveals the slow erosion of faithfulness and sets the foundation for the cycle of sin that will dominate the book.
