The Gibeonites, fearing Israel, disguise themselves as distant travelers and deceive Joshua into making a covenant with them. Israel fails to inquire of the Lord and binds themselves to an oath they cannot break. When the truth emerges, Israel honors the covenant but assigns the Gibeonites to serve as woodcutters and water-carriers for the tabernacle. This chapter teaches discernment, the importance of seeking God’s guidance, and the seriousness of vows made in His name. It also foreshadows Christ’s mercy on Gentiles who come in humility—even imperfectly—seeking refuge with the God of Israel.
