Despite Jericho’s victory, Israel is defeated at Ai because of hidden sin in the camp. Achan stole devoted items from Jericho and buried them under his tent. God withdraws His presence from Israel, and thirty-six men die in battle. Joshua pleads before the Lord, who reveals the sin and commands it to be exposed publicly. Through a solemn process tribe by tribe, Achan is identified, confesses, and receives judgment in the Valley of Achor. This chapter demonstrates the seriousness of sin, the danger of disobedience, and the impossibility of hiding anything from God. It foreshadows Christ, who becomes the sin-bearer so that God’s people may be restored to fellowship.
