Before Israel can fight a single battle, God commands Joshua to circumcise all the males born during the wilderness years, renewing the covenant sign they had neglected. Israel remains vulnerable until they heal, trusting God to protect them in enemy territory. They celebrate Passover in the land, and the manna ceases—a sign that a new season has begun. Joshua then encounters the mysterious Commander of the LORD’s Army, who tells him to remove his sandals, for the ground is holy. This divine figure—often understood as a pre-incarnate appearance of Christ—reveals that victory belongs to God alone. The chapter teaches preparation through consecration and foreshadows the greater Passover Lamb who leads His people into victory.
