Joshua commands twelve men—one from each tribe—to take stones from the Jordan’s riverbed where the priests stood. These stones become a memorial at Gilgal so future generations will ask, “What do these stones mean?” The answer: God stopped the Jordan’s waters so His people could cross on dry ground. After the priests step out, the river resumes its flow. This chapter teaches the importance of remembering God’s faithfulness, instructing children in His works, and marking His mercies so they are not forgotten. It also shows God’s desire that all nations know the power of His hand. The memorial points forward to Christ, our permanent stone of remembrance in whom God’s saving power is fully revealed.
