Israel stands at the edge of promise, commanded to consecrate themselves because God is about to do wonders among them. The priests carrying the Ark of the Covenant lead the way, and despite the Jordan River being at flood stage, the waters stop as soon as their feet touch the edge. The river piles up far upstream at Adam, creating a path of dry ground for the entire nation. The priests stand firm in the middle of the river until every man, woman, and child crosses safely into Canaan. This chapter demonstrates God’s power to make a way where none exists and mirrors the Red Sea crossing, confirming Joshua’s leadership. It foreshadows Christ, who stands in the midst of judgment’s flood and opens the only path to eternal life.
