Joshua gathers Israel at Shechem and recounts God’s entire redemptive history—from Abraham’s calling to the present. He commands Israel to put away idols and choose whom they will serve, declaring, “As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” Israel agrees to serve the Lord, and Joshua establishes a covenant written in the Book of the Law, with a stone set up as a witness. The book ends with Joshua’s death, Joseph’s bones buried in Shechem, and Eleazar’s passing. This chapter teaches covenant loyalty, the need to cast out idolatry, and God’s enduring faithfulness. It foreshadows Christ, the mediator of a better covenant who calls His people to wholehearted devotion.
