Joshua secretly sends two spies into Jericho, where they find shelter in the home of Rahab, a prostitute whose heart has already turned toward Israel’s God. She hides them from the king’s men, confesses that the whole land trembles because they have heard of God’s mighty works, and declares that “the LORD your God is God in heaven above and on earth below.” Rahab pleads for mercy for her family, and the spies bind themselves to a covenant sealed by a scarlet cord hung from her window. After escaping down the wall, they report to Joshua that God has truly delivered the land. This chapter reveals God’s grace reaching into unexpected places, teaches that faith responds to God’s truth even before seeing the miracle, and foreshadows salvation through Christ—the greater scarlet covering that protects all who take refuge in Him.
