Though Joshua is old, God reminds him that much land remains to be possessed. God instructs him to divide the territory anyway, for He Himself will drive out the remaining nations. The chapter recaps the inheritance given by Moses to Reuben, Gad, and half-Manasseh east of the Jordan. The tribe of Levi receives no land because “the LORD is their inheritance.” This chapter teaches that God’s promises unfold over generations, and true inheritance rests in His presence. It foreshadows Christ, our eternal portion.
