A vast northern coalition led by Jabin of Hazor rises against Israel. God tells Joshua not to fear the multitude, promising to deliver them. Israel strikes suddenly at the Waters of Merom, hamstrings the enemy’s horses, and burns their chariots. Hazor is destroyed as the head of all these kingdoms. The chapter emphasizes God’s sovereignty in hardening the hearts of the nations to bring judgment and fulfill His promises. Joshua leaves nothing undone that God commanded Moses. It foreshadows Christ, the righteous Judge who conquers all who oppose God’s kingdom.
