Joshua 1 marks the divine commissioning of Joshua after Moses’ death. God commands Joshua to lead Israel across the Jordan into the land promised to Abraham, repeating the charge “Be strong and courageous” three times as an anchor for Joshua’s fear. The Lord promises His unfailing presence, instructing Joshua to meditate on the Book of the Law day and night so that obedience—not military genius—will bring success. Joshua rallies the officers, orders the people to prepare, and reminds the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half-Manasseh of their vow to fight alongside Israel until all receive their inheritance. They pledge full loyalty to Joshua and echo God’s words back to him. The chapter highlights leadership rooted in God’s presence, faith built on His promises, and obedience as Israel’s pathway to victory. It foreshadows Christ, the greater Joshua, who leads God’s people into the true promised rest.
