John 19 Teaching Notes / Biblical Summary

John 19 records the crucifixion of Jesus. After being scourged and mocked, He is presented to the crowd and sentenced to death. Though Pilate struggles, political pressure prevails.

At Golgotha, Jesus is crucified between two others. Scripture is fulfilled in the dividing of His garments and in the piercing of His side. His final declaration, “It is finished,” marks the completion of His mission. He willingly gives up His spirit. He is buried by Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus.

Christ-Foreshadowing

Jesus fulfills the Passover imagery — none of His bones are broken. The piercing fulfills prophecy. His declaration of completion signals the fulfillment of the covenant and the payment of sin’s debt. The garden tomb prepares the stage for resurrection

Full Song Lyrics

Verse 1 — Scourged and Crowned

Pilate had Him scourged that day,

Back torn open by the lash.

Soldiers wove a crown of thorns,

Pressed it down with mocking scorn.

Purple robe upon His frame,

“Hail, King of Jews!” — they laughed His name.

They struck His face, they bowed in jest,

The silent King endured the test.

Chorus — Behold the Man

Pilate brought Him bleeding there,

“Behold the Man,” before the stare.

Yet still they cried, “Crucify!”

Mercy stood — and was denied.

Verse 2 — No King but Caesar

“He made Himself God’s own Son!”

Those words made Pilate fear what’s done.

“Do You not know I hold the right

To free or nail You here tonight?”

Jesus said, calm and clear,

“No power stands unless given here.”

Pilate tried to let Him go,

But fear of Caesar ruled the show.

“Behold your King!” — he cried in strain.

“We have no king but Caesar!” they claimed.

Verse 3 — Golgotha

He bore His cross outside the gate,

To the Skull — the place of fate.

Two were crucified that day,

One each side — He in the way.

Above His head the title read,

In three tongues clearly spread:

“Jesus of Nazareth — King of the Jews,”

Truth declared they could not refuse.

Verse 4 — Fulfilled

They cast lots for His seamless coat,

Scripture walking every note.

Near the cross His mother stood,

And the disciple whom He loved.

“Woman, behold your son,” He said.

“Behold your mother.” — love still led.

Chorus — It Is Finished

Knowing all was now complete,

He said, “I thirst,” in final speech.

They raised sour wine upon a reed.

Then He spoke with sovereign breath:

“It is finished.” — not defeat,

But redemption made complete.

He bowed His head and gave His life.

Verse 5 — Pierced

They broke the legs of those beside,

But saw in Him no breath inside.

A soldier pierced Him in the side —

Blood and water testified.

Not one bone broken — just as told.

They looked on Him whom they had pierced — behold.

Outro — Laid in a Tomb

Joseph came with courage new,

Nicodemus brought spices too.

Wrapped in linen, placed inside

A garden tomb before sunset’s tide.

A stone was rolled across the door.

The earth grew still — but not for long.
