John 17 Teaching Notes / Biblical Summary

John 17 records Jesus’ prayer just before His arrest. He prays first for Himself — that the Father would glorify Him through the cross. He defines eternal life as knowing the Father and the Son.

He then prays for His disciples, asking God to protect them, keep them united, and sanctify them in truth. Finally, He prays for all future believers, asking that they be unified so the world may believe. The prayer reveals deep intimacy within the Trinity and Christ’s loving concern for those who follow Him.

Christ-Foreshadowing

This prayer stands at the threshold of the cross. Jesus speaks as High Priest, offering Himself for the sake of His people. His request for glory anticipates resurrection. His prayer for unity foreshadows the forming of the Church through the Spirit.

Verse 1 — The Hour Has Come

He lifted His eyes and began to pray,

“Father, the hour has come today.

Glorify Your Son in this,

So I may glorify You in it.

You gave Me power over all,

To give eternal life to those You call.

This is life — to know You true,

And Jesus Christ whom You have sent.”

Chorus — Eternal Life

To know the Father, to know the Son,

Not just in word — but as the One

Who gives what death cannot erase,

Life that stands by sovereign grace.

But those You placed here at My side.

They are Yours — and You are Mine,

And through them now My glory shines.

I leave the world — they stay behind,

Holy Father, guard their minds.

Keep them one as We are One,

Held together by Your Son.”

Steady through both loss and flame.

Guard their hearts from evil’s hand,

Not removed — but helped to stand.

Verse 4 — Sanctify Them

“They are not of the world’s design,

Though still they walk within its line.

Sanctify them in what is true —

Your word alone will see them through.

As You sent Me into the land,

I now send them by Your hand.

For their sake I give Myself,

Set apart — for someone else.”

Verse 5 — For Those to Come

“I do not pray for these alone,

But those who’ll trust through what they’ve shown.

May they be one — as We are One,

So the world knows what You have done.

The glory given now I share,

That unity may be declared.”

Final Chorus — Let Them See

Father, let them see My face,

The love You gave before all space.

Let the world come to believe

You sent Me here — that they might live.

Outro — Known in Love

“I made You known — and will again,

So love may dwell in them — and I in them.”
